TL;DR - This is a wall of text.
I disagree. There were obviously some scenarios that favored a certain mech, and going first (or second) in those scenarios gave you a greater chance of winning.
I know I had to work hard to hold off using my grapple on certain maps and keep a long range weapon handy, and yes, sometimes sucker the opponent into the first stomp etc.
But the (dis)advantage goes both ways. I don't mind if they want to tweak the setups, or if the buffs only last x number of rounds etc.
But again, I prefer the variety of terrain, accepting that sometimes I won't be able to use them (ie. using an energy mech and 4 heat or explosive buffs come up).
There was hardly "no skill" and degenerate play. Matches are far more predictable... and BORING in comparison.
I know I lost certain matches due to the fact my opponent got the right floor buff and starting location on the map. This does not bother me. I do recall you blaming most of your losses on the floor buffs, so I know they bothered you in particular.
Your arguing there is no way to counter a person getting lucky on a floorbuff, is the same in my mind as arguing there is no way to counter damage ranges - ie. a player who gets lucky hits with their shotgun, so lets harmonize damage to an average to be fair.
Other things that are not "fair" - one player goes first. And position + turn order can't be countered.
Or starting beside someone with an axe/lavaspray so they don't need to approach you.
Or playing with an axe/lavaspray and your opponent gets to go first and has long distance weapons (especially energy).
It is just a fact that the matches are not inherently even, because they cannot be. I still prefer to see a variety of builds, a variety of weapons and a variety of terrain. Removing terrain bonuses has made this game more dull. Whether every map was fair or not or favored energy or favored godmode or favored heat or favored physical or favored diamonds or favored noobs or favored experts. Or was a disadvantage for any of the above. At least the maps were different and entertaining.
I would prefer they allow the choice for players to have or not have the platforms than remove them. They have been there for as long as I have been playing, and to have a significant part of the entertainment and strategy removed is annoying.
